…there are countless unscrupulous vendors that would pass off non-kyara/non-kynam materials as the real thing. Many had always assumed that the “chinese” consumers were “stupid/dumb”, but in actual fact, there is a good proportion that are extremely wise and knowledgeable. You can see my previous soil agarwood article to see the quality/type of materials that the higher end Chinese are playing with, which to me, is extremely impressive. Years ago,…

Japanese Incense types
…there are 3 sub categories, sho-koh, stick incense, or makkoh-trails. Sho-koh Sho-koh is made from chopping or blending fragrant materials into fine pieces in careful proportions. Meant to be burnt directly by sprinkling onto a hot coal instead of gentle heating, the sho-koh process generates quite a formidable amount of smoke, with the ability to fumigate places, temples, rooms etc. Stick Incense A more accurate direct translation for this in…
Secrets on choosing Yixing Teapots
…f its too hot. If you are brewing a delicate tea, a greeny oolong, or sheng-pu-erh, this steaming will cause the bitter/astringent to come out faster, and potentially the leaves becoming “cooked and vegetal” in taste. In such cases, leaving the lid off is helpful. If you are brewing a tightly rolled, mid oxidation or high oxidation oolong, allowing it to steam in the early durations of brewing can aid aroma and leaf unfurling. If your vessel is hu…

I do not receive a single cent of commission from them as we’re not associated in anyway, I’m a consumer just like you. But maybe if I helped them bring some business, perhaps they will be more generous with samplers the next time I make a purchase 🙂 Once you have confirmed you had filled everything carefully, click the mag…

Soil Agarwoods
…od influenced by the soil it is buried in! And if you slice the wood above open, you will see nice compaction and really high resination. This is what people would refer to as the “Meat” of the wood. Similarly, the above yellow soil agarwood (premium), when lightly shaved, it reveals the beautiful “meat” within. Over time of being buried in depths and subjected to lots of soil pressure, erosion, weathering etc, the material can also form cracks on…
Traditional Dong Ding Oolong & the KZ Tea Experiment
…ble amounts like 10-20 grams should be transferred into a canister of about 100-200ml volume, and the tea allowed to “awaken”. How can you tell that the tea is ready for brewing? When you smell the leaves in the canister and you dont get the dry nutty roast notes, but instead a floral mild ripe fruit note peeks out, it is ready to be brewed. Only awaken amounts that you can finish in due time, and not the whole huge pack, because as of all oolongs…
How to store Kyara and fragrant woods
…in an intricately folded origami envelop. Most people would assume that zip-locs are air-tight and impermeable to everything. They are mistakened! Just like my favourite fruit, the formidable durian of asia. You can pack it into a zip-loc bag, seal it, into another zip loc bag, seal it, wrap the whole pack in cling film etc, and at the end of it, to realize that it still can be smelt! This is because volatile molecules contributing to a durian…

Whilst there’s a chance of me reviewing some products from various companies/merchants in the future, currently, Kyarazen does not endorse any product nor company, and similarly does not authenticate nor verify fragrant wood for anyone except on a personal basis. If I’m fortunate enough to receive a sponsorship from any company, or request for endorsement etc, I will definitely make it clear to consumers by then on my website, but in the m…
What is Kyara or Kynam?
…Sinensis, Crassna, or Malaccensis, have not been able to induce or obtain materials that are comparable to wild agarwood, not to even talk about forming such extremely rare and superior kyara/kynam materials. Perhaps only from the microscopic structure alone, we can observe compaction that seem to imply that kynam/kyara to be core/heartwood material. I personally believe kyara to be formed by a combination of all the previous speculations stated….
