Secrets of Tea Seasons and Ageing
…red by experienced tea drinkers. Instead, autumn teas can be well liked by new-comers to tea as many people start off appreciating tea from the aromatics. A nice analogy would be just dropping a slice of lemon peel into water. You get aroma only, whilst the aroma may make the water more enjoyable, imagine having some lemon juice, some sugar inside, a bit of carbonation, and the drink is now tasty. In oxidized teas such as Oolongs/Tie Kwan Yin, spr…
Does Kyara sink in water?

Agarwood in the 1980s
…like in the 80s. It was not uncommon to have gigantic well resinated woods pass through the hands of Mr Lee as you can see in this picture from 1985 🙂 Some parts of the block had resin more than 1 inch thick and almost solid in nature! How I wish i was there to buy this piece in the 80s, that would definitely serve my “kodo” needs for this lifetimes and many generations to come. This piece was eventually sold to Japan if Mr Lee did not remember wr…

Three of the ingredients of Samadhi pre-compounded together with some water added, mixed and pounded and dried in the shade. The clumps will eventually have to be ground again into a fine powder, and mixed with other ingredients/compo…

One of the very fortunate few whom had been able to experience Ranjatai through monkoh , Professor Nishiyama Matsu from the Tokyo University of Education recounts his experience (translated): “Thus far, without a doubt, I believe the Ranjatai to…
De-mystifying Onycha
…k during archaeological excavation. This suggests that Onycha was a traded commodity during that period of time. Where does Onycha come from? It is the opercula of a mollusk, generally of the murex species. To put things in simpler terms, onycha, the opercula of a mollusk, is simply the “gate” or “trapdoor” that the shellfish uses to protect itself from predators, and also prevent itself from drying out. Some species of conch use their operculum t…
KZ ventures into oils
…oil that a Taiwanese suppler had constantly stocked pile for the religious communities to use over the past few decades. What is our business model on this? Don’t drop your jaw on this. We’re looking at narrow margins for ourself, in the spirit of sharing. We’re not here to corner the market or to disrupt it, but just to share good scents. This is not in anyway to rock the boat for the oud trade. There are many esteemed oud distillers, oud sellers…
